Child Eligibility

Who is eligible?

Mentor Superior has two different programs to fit the needs of children, families, and mentors. Find out more about them and discover which one is right for you.

Community-Based Mentoring:

Children are between 5-17 years old, and primarily from single parent families (where biological parents are not married or living together). Children live in Duluth, Proctor, Hermantown or Superior. We are not currently enrolling children with Personal Care Assistants. Some exceptions to these criteria are made with special circumstances. To enroll a child, contact Salisa Hochstetler at (218) 393-9160 or shochstetler@duluthymca.org.

Mentors must be committed to building a friendship with a young person, be at least 18 years of age, and have a reliable means of transportation. They must be at a stable point in their life where they are willing and able to make a personal commitment to this relationship and be a positive role model to a child. They must also complete the application process, including an application, reference and background checks, a screening interview, and an orientation. Mentors may apply as an individual, as a couple, or as a family.

All parties must commit to at least one year of the mentoring relationship and be able to meet 8-12 hours per month.

Academic Site-Based Mentoring:

Mentor Superior has started an academic mentoring program at Northern Light Elementary School. To enroll children who are in need of or can benefit from academic mentoring, please contact Kim Rampier at (218) 393-9160 or ksrampier@gmail.com. Eligible children are those who attend Northern Light Elementary School.

Mentors must be committed to developing a friendship with a young person while assisting them with academic and personal growth. Volunteers must complete the application process, including an application, reference and background checks, and an orientation.

All parties commit to at least one semester of mentoring and must be able to meet weekly as scheduled during that time..
